“Getting to work on rural Maine”

Many readers of the Morning Sentinel, Wednesday, January 4, 2017 may have read “Getting to work on rural Maine” (George Smith’s “Maine Stream” column). Smith’s piece is not only timely but also aptly targeted to the heart of what must be a major industry in Maine’s future rural economy, forestry, one of Maine’s renewable natural resources.

Alan Caron of Envision Maine and George Smith, will present, “Envisioning Maine’s Future Economy,” in a Senior College Forum scheduled for 2:00 pm, on January 22, 2017 at University of Maine Augusta, Jewett Hall. The Forum is sponsored by, the College of Arts and Sciences.

William Basford, a Civil Engineer and member of Mid-Maine Progressive Forum of Waterville, has studied timber framing extensively and proposed that this would be a prime industry for Maine.

Basford’s well researched proposal would make an excellent presentation for a future Senior College Forum agenda in Augusta. And equally as important, Basford’s recommendations could also be an important part of the “Summit on Rural Maine Economy,” planned for the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor, February 10th

Both these events coincide with the vision and mission of the Mid-Maine Progressive Forum. It is highly recommend that we arrange to find suitable venues for Basford’s proposal for a timber framing industry in Maine. Give us your comments and recommendations
